Women's Issues: Surrogacy in India
Dr. Nayna Patel's Akanksha Infertility Clinic in Gujarat, India, is known internationally for its surrogacy program. Since 2004, more than 1,013 surrogate babies have been born at the clinic. On October 28, 2015, the Indian government instructed clinics not to allow foreigners to employ Indian women as surrogates. Surrogacy for profit is illegal in many other countries. Dr Patel says one third of her clients are foreigners. The cost of surrogacy at the Akanksha Clinic is around $30,000 with minimum of $8,500 going to the surrogate mother.
